On May 10th, Carleton Heights Public School welcomed 65 parents and guardians for a Literacy Session presented through the OCDSB’s Student Achievement Through Equity (SATE) Inquiry. The goal of the session was to equip parents of kindergarten and grade 1 students with practical literacy tools, strategies that would help them in building their children’s reading, writing, and oral skills.
SATE Coach Suhana Kadoura and grade 1 teacher Erin Deacon shared helpful suggestions, games, writing activities, and take-away resources to promote literacy activities at home. Community Education Liaison Noora Hussein shared about the work of SATE and the importance of parent engagement. Deborah Stowe spoke about the OCDSB’s EarlyON Centres, which offer free programs for families and children from birth to 6 years old. Finally, the Ottawa Public Library supported the event by speaking about the many free programs that the Library offers to the community.
Thank you to all those who attended, and to the SATE, Carleton Heights, Early Learning, and Ottawa Public Library staff who collaborated to make this event possible!
